Why does CHOICE matter in dog training?
Your dog is constantly making choices and decisions. The decision whether to bark at the mailman, whether to steal food from the trash, whether to jump up on guests, etc. You shouldn’t be having to constantly tell your dog which decisions they should make. A well-trained dog will make good choices on their OWN because they have a full understand of what behaviors are and are not acceptable. When your dog is taught the ability to make the TOP CHOICE in any situation, they can have more freedom!
YOU make important choices when it comes to training your dog, too!
The biggest choice you’ll make is who you choose to help you train your dog. Here are some tips on picking a dog trainer:
- Always meet with the trainer before hiring them so you can make sure they’re a good fit for you.
- Pick a trainer who makes you feel comfortable! You don’t need to go with a trainer who guilt-trips you for things you’ve chosen to do (or not do) with your dog, or one who puts you down when teaching you how to work with your dog. Training your dog should be positive and fun for you and your dog!
- Does the trainer have 1 training method that they use for every dog they train? Or do they look at your dog, and at YOU, to decide which method is going to be best for your individual needs?
- Do they truly listen to your goals and the issues you’re having with your dog? Or do they stick to the same curriculum they use on every dog they train?

One of the most important aspects of dog training is making sure the owner learns the skills they need to be able to effectively communicate with their dog. Whether you do private lessons or a board-and-train, you will learn how to properly teach, reward, and enforce your dog's training.

The first step is a conversation- either over the phone or in person-where we’ll discuss your dog’s history, your training goals, and the approach that will work best for both of you. This also gives you an opportunity to ask me any questions you may have.
